How maths is taught – the hundred square

As they progress, children are introduced to the “hundred square”. This is an array of numbers, 10 across and 10 down. Numbers have been entered on this grid, starting at the top left hand corner with usually 0, following by 1,2,3 etc to 9 at the top right hand corner, then starting again one line lower with 10,11,12, etc

This form of presentation packs many more numbers into an area, and also introduces a useful feature of counting up and down in 10’s as well as sideways in 1’s.

However is introduces 3 major problems for children, all of which are easily overcome by the ablest children, but not by the somewhat less able.
